A Beginners Guide: Gym Starter Pack

 A Beginner’s Guide: Gym Starter Pack ๐Ÿ’“

Joining the gym can be a very daunting prospect; entering a new environment, feeling unsure where to begin, all whilst not wanting to embarrass yourself in the process. It took me a considerable length of time to gain the confidence, in myself and my workout routine, that I have today. Reflecting on my fitness journey, these are 4 things I wish I would have known when I started;

1.Prioritise a workout split

Creating a simple, straightforward fitness split is your key to successfully structuring your workouts. Try and make sure you are targeting each body area, for example, an upper body day, lower body and leave some time for cardio and abs if you are feeling brave! Preparing a rough workout plan before you work out reduces the chance of feeling overwhelmed and underprepared, as you don’t need to spend time worrying about what exercises you are going to do after you arrive.

However, if you don’t quite feel comfortable working out yourself, a great way to transition to this is through a workout class! There are various types of workout classes you can try out to find what works for you, varying from spin, body pump, HIIT... there are styles for everyone! Classes are a great way to meet other people whilst gaining inspiration for your own workouts!

2. Find what time works best for you

Now that you have a workout routine, it is important to figure out what time of day best suits you to exercise. Certain people exercise better early in the morning, before they begin their day, whereas others prefer working out in the afternoon or evening. Creating the right workout schedule, tailored to your needs will ensure you achieve your maximum potential!

3. Find your gym uniform

The saying “when you look good you feel good” is very accurate in relation to working out. It is essential that you feel comfortable in what you wear, this can be a workout set, joggers, shorts, whatever it is, the more comfortable you feel the more confidence you will have, which will contribute significantly to having a successful workout.

4. Start light, focus on form

It can be tempting to want to lift the heaviest you can and push your body to the limit in the gym. However, especially in the early stages of working out, it is essential that you increase the weight of exercises over time and concentrate on perfecting your form. This ensures you avoid injury whilst performing the exercise correctly.
